The opera singer and I have been tasting crab cakes around town for the last couple of weeks. The top pick so far has been Oceanaire followed closely by The Top of the Market at the Fish Market on the habor. Actually should be a tie since I liked one better and she liked the other, but her vote apparently carries more weight as she's from the East Coast and I am from everywhere else.
The best cakes are pure expressions of the sea and have as little doctoring as possible. Sauces should also be simple so as to not mask and/or overpower the crab. Needless to say, the crab must be of perfect freshness and ONLY lump blue crab from the Chesapeake Bay will do.
We had cakes Sunday night with so many additions in the way of herbs, vegetables, and who knows what else, that they had to be returned to the kitchen after one bite. The establishment shall remain anonymous.
Anybody have any other places to check out for crab cakes. I'm also still looking for a good burger in San Diego. I and my appetite thank you in advance.
